It depends on the tool, so ask five questions before you upload: where the file is stored, who else processes it, whether it is used to train a model, how long it is kept, and whether you can delete it yourself. For BetterPPT the answers are: files travel over encrypted connections and are kept in private cloud storage; the slides are processed by external AI models that BetterPPT calls through their APIs; BetterPPT does not train its own model; unpaid decks are deleted automatically after 3 days, paid decks are kept for 1 year, and you can delete any deck yourself at any time. If your company's policy forbids sending documents to any third-party AI service, don't upload — no tool can change that policy for you.

Where the file goes, and who processes it
Your .pptx is uploaded over an encrypted connection and kept in private cloud storage. To redesign the slides, BetterPPT sends their content to external AI models through those providers' APIs — one of them is Alibaba Cloud's Qwen platform. That is how the redesign is done, so it is worth knowing before you upload. BetterPPT itself doesn't have its own model and doesn't train one. The main models are Alibaba Cloud's Qwen. The platform documents TLS 1.2 or higher on all API connections and automated content screening of requests; its Model Studio documentation says prompts and responses are kept for no more than 30 days by default (longer only where the law requires it or to protect the service) and that business data is not used to train its models without authorization. So Qwen may keep what it processes for up to 30 days, even though BetterPPT deletes an unpaid deck after 3. DeepSeek is a small model used only for a supporting step — rewriting the short summary of the choices you make on the setup page — and it does not receive your slides' text or images. That matters because DeepSeek's privacy policy says that, after de-identification, inputs and outputs may be used to train and improve its models unless you opt out. Each provider sets its own terms, which BetterPPT can't promise on their behalf; if that matters for your deck, read the providers' terms or ask your IT team.

How long it is kept, and how to delete it
Unpaid decks are deleted automatically after 3 days, including the uploaded file and the generated files. Paid decks are kept for 1 year so you can download them again. Either way you can delete any deck yourself, at any time, from the ··· menu on the deck's card. Retention is a real difference between tools: ask any service how long it keeps an unpaid upload, and whether deletion is automatic or something you have to request.

Five questions to ask any AI tool before uploading
1) Where is the file stored, and is it encrypted in transit? 2) Which other services process the content? 3) Is my content used to train a model — the tool's own, or a provider's? 4) How long is an unpaid or abandoned upload kept? 5) Can I delete it myself, and does deletion really remove the file? A tool that can't answer each of these in a sentence isn't ready for a confidential deck. Also check the part nobody asks: does the free tier follow the same rules as the paid one?

Reduce what you upload
You decide how much goes in. Replace real client names, unreleased figures or personal details with placeholders before uploading, then put the real values back in the returned .pptx — it's editable. If you want the wording left alone, choose the keep-every-word mode when you set up the job. For a deck where nothing can be shared outside the company, don't upload at all: use a tool your company has already approved.

Who BetterPPT is for — and who it isn't
BetterPPT is an AI design agent that redesigns PowerPoint decks you've already written — every slide individually — and returns an editable .pptx. It's for decks where a lot is riding on it — investor meetings, client pitches, board updates, promotion reviews and conference talks. It isn't for a class assignment or a routine team update: free tools like PowerPoint Designer or Canva's free plan are enough for those. And it isn't for a deck your company forbids sending to a third-party AI service. It's paid — $39 for up to 30 slides, with a $9.90 deposit to preview up to six of your slides first.

Questions
Does BetterPPT train AI models on my deck?
No. BetterPPT doesn't have its own AI model and doesn't train one. It sends your slides to external AI models through their APIs to redesign them, mainly Alibaba Cloud's Qwen, which by default keeps prompts and responses for no more than 30 days and does not use your business data for training without authorization. DeepSeek, a small model, only rewrites a short summary of your setup choices and never receives your slides; its policy allows de-identified inputs and outputs to be used for training unless you opt out. Each provider has its own terms, which BetterPPT can't promise on their behalf.
How long does BetterPPT keep my uploaded file?
Unpaid decks are deleted automatically after 3 days. Paid decks are kept for 1 year so you can download them again. You can delete any deck yourself at any time from the ··· menu on its card. The external AI model that processes your slides, Alibaba Cloud's Qwen, keeps prompts and responses for up to 30 days by default.
Is my file encrypted, and is it shared with anyone?
Files are uploaded over encrypted connections and stored in private cloud storage. The slides' content is processed by the external AI models BetterPPT calls through their APIs, as needed to redesign them; it isn't published or handed to other people.
Should I upload a deck my company marks as confidential?
Only if your company's policy allows sending documents to a third-party AI service. If it does, replace real client names and unreleased figures with placeholders first and restore them in the returned, editable .pptx. If it doesn't, don't upload — use a tool your company has approved.
Can I upload patient case slides or hospital data to an AI redesign tool?
Only if your hospital's policy allows sending documents to a third-party AI service — and even then, take the patient details out first. Removing names is often not enough: record numbers, exact dates, faces in photos and rare-case details can still identify someone. BetterPPT sends slide content to external AI models through their APIs and has no HIPAA or business-associate arrangements (an NDA can be signed on request: email support@betterppt.com before you upload); unpaid decks are deleted automatically after 3 days, paid decks are kept for 1 year, and you can delete any deck yourself at any time. If your policy says no, don't upload.
Does BetterPPT offer HIPAA compliance, a business associate agreement or an NDA?
BetterPPT does not offer HIPAA compliance or a business associate agreement, and it doesn't claim any compliance certification. It can sign an NDA on request: email support@betterppt.com before you upload. An NDA binds BetterPPT; slide content is still processed by external AI models, whose retention terms are their own. For decks containing protected health information, use a tool your organization has approved; for teaching and training decks, use de-identified or fictional cases.
My client contract says no client data in third-party tools without approval. Can I still use BetterPPT?
Not without approval. Get your firm's or the client's written permission first. BetterPPT sends slide content to external AI models through their APIs, has no compliance certification, and can sign an NDA on request (email support@betterppt.com), but none of that stands in for that approval. If you can't get it, don't upload the original; an anonymised copy, with names, figures and logos replaced by placeholders, is the usual fallback.
What should I remove from a deck before uploading it to any AI tool?
Client and people names, logos, identifying figures and org charts, and the hidden material that a visible edit does not remove: speaker notes, comments, data embedded behind charts, document properties, and old client names left in slide masters. In PowerPoint, File → Info → Check for Issues → Inspect Document, run on a copy, lists much of it, but check the result yourself. Put the real names back in the returned, editable .pptx.
Bottom line
BetterPPT redesigns every slide individually and returns an editable .pptx for a one-time $39 (up to 30 slides). You choose how much of your wording may change, and a $9.90 deposit shows you up to six of your own slides before you pay the rest.
